Spiritual Gifts + Mature Believers in Christ
Last night Kirsten and I started a a new Bible study on the book of 1 Corinthians, specifically verses 1-9 last night. While studying for these first few verses one major idea stood out to me from verses 5-7.
1 Corinthians 1:5-7
5 that in every way you were enriched in him in all speech and all knowledge- 6 even as the testimony about Christ was confirmed among you- 7 so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ,
Here God has told us that He has given us all some type of spiritual gift. I think though that we must not box this “spiritual gift(s)” into that of only teaching, preaching, healing, prophesy, etc. I believe God has given every very unique gifts beyond that as well, and we have had most (but not all) of our gifts long before we even salvation in Christ.
- Preachers could speak to a large crowd about something they were passionate about.
- Counselors could relate to someone else’s problems, speak to them and guide them like no on else around them.
- Business men could gain great vision about how to run their company and make a large amount of money for self gain.
The problem is that before salvation, where are you guiding the broken and what are you preaching to the lost?
With Christ in the picture things begin to change and we now see a way to use the gifts that God has given us. Yet here lies problem #2, we still will tend to lean toward selfish motives with our gifts due to immaturity in the faith. Paul speaks on this later in 1 Corinthians in chapters 8 & 12. In my personal local church we have over 5,000 in attendance each weekend. I believe a large amount are believers in Christ and are highly skilled and spiritually gifted people that utilize these gifts in their workplace, home, social scene and friendships. Imagine if the thousands of believers continued to mature in their faith and used their gifts in their business’s, schools, families to further the Kingdom of God. What we usually have is highly skilled immature people in their faith which can cause major problems in our community.
Salvation is their but we lack discipline in our walks. We lack wisdom which comes through prayer, reading God’s Word and accountability through intentional community. So today my prayer for my local church and surrounding church’s is that we will begin to ask the following question:
Am I using my spiritual gifts (abilities, skills, talents) that God has given me to further His Kingdom through my local church and my sphere of influence or for my personal gain?
Because imagine what the church could do for your city if 1,000’s of local believers leveraged is skills and influence while remembering 1 Corinthians 1:4-9!
